Room 317 [after classes]

After an interesting conversation with his father early in the morning, Luke had gone for a long run.

And then an even longer session alone with the punching bag.

And then he'd tried some meditation.

Now? He'd spread parts to a small droid out all over the floor, back carefully turned away from the half of the room that was supposed to have a Z in it, and fiddled around with electronics.

Loud Corellian rock was blaring from his stereo and out through the open door.

If you asked him? He was fine.

He shook his head. "Going through the pictures in the holo was the longest stretch of time he'd ever spent talking to me about her."

"She's not gonna be your mom." Rikku shrugged. "I mean, it's gonna be weird, yeah, and it might be ... hard? If they're all happy together and you're like 'that's great, but she's not Mom.' She's just ... the girl your dad married. Uh. Right?"

She had a feeling she knew the next topic of conversation she had to take up with her grandfather now. "It's your mother," she said, shaking her head. "You have a right to know."

"It took him months to even tell me her name," Luke said. "I knew it before then, but he just doesn't talk about her."

Pause. "Does he talk to you about her?" No jealousy there, nope.

"And one of my best friends," Luke said, "and I know I'm being stupid because they just fit together and it's not like my mother's ever coming back, but there's a new student now who looks just like her and it's kind of freaking me out."

He kind of collapsed onto it, holding onto Jo's hand like it was the only thing keeping him anchored.

Which wasn't too far from the truth.

"There's a student running around with her face, too," he whispered. "I kind of hate this, maybe, a little."

"Little things, here and there. There's been a lot of piecing things together," she said, and kind of thought now that it was only that way because she'd been the one not wanting to push for information.

"...yeah, that'd do it. I think that wins for making trouble."

"He holds onto those memories like he can exchange them for Alderaanian artifacts," Luke bitched.

"What part of it's freaking you out?" she asked, walking over to grab a seat near his. "I can understand, I mean, if there was someone here that looked just like my mom ..."

She took a second to imagine that, and had to swallow past a lump.

"If you were him, would you be willing to give up that sort of information that easily?" Jaina asked.

That meant she had to lean over to give him a hug. "Right about now? I'd totally let you be veep, you know. The universe seems to hate you a bit more than me. Which I didn't think was possible, so that's something, right?"

Jo sat next to him, rubbing his back. "I don't blame you. That must just make it harder."

It struck Dawn for the first time that maybe Luke could be scary, given the right circumstances. "See, the cool part about breathing? It happens all on its own while you're thinking about other stuff. And you've got a whole bunch of other--ohhhhhhhhhhhh. I'm sorry about the your mom thing. I'd be all weirded out too, if someone who looked like mine was here."

And naturally, Gavin wasn't expecting that and went down in a heap of arms, legs and Luke.

"I take it it wasn't fun?" Alex guessed.

He was truly an imposing, giggling, totally ticklish teenager.

Luke grinned. "That wasn't entirely the intention, but winning is always good."

"It is for everyone else," Luke said, grinning.

"It's been a really, really long few days," Luke whined.

"To my son? Yes," Luke said stubbornly.

Luke leaned in for a second before pulling back again. "It's not exactly a distinction I was going for," he said with a sigh.

Not that Gavin was, you know, beefy or anything.
