Luke wouldn't say that he had been spending the entire weekend hiding in his room, but he'd pretty much spent the entire weekend hiding in his room.

He'd call it "processing."

It looked a lot like brooding.

Yoda was in his tank doing the supportive pet thing. Or sleeping. It was kind of hard to tell.

"Not quite Alderaan gone," Luke said, "but the Empire was...pretty thorough."

"Oh, Luke," she breathed. "Why didn't you say anything before?"

Luke was still staring at the floor. "Didn't exactly come up in conversation."

"You should've said something," Rory said very quietly. "I'm so, so sorry."

"What's there to say, really?" Luke asked. "Has anything people have said to you about my father helped?"

It was Rory's turn to look down. "No. But no one should have to deal with something like this entirely alone, even if it doesn't help very much."

"Ben died going up against Vader," Luke said softly. "Biggs died in the assault against the Death Star." He swallowed hard. "And Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen died because we bought the wrong droids."

Rory moved over and hesitantly wrapped an arm around his shoulders, staying quiet.

Luke moved closer and closed his eyes.

"Thanks," he said after a long moment.

"Of course," Rory replied, not letting go yet. "Everyone should have someone to talk to about this kind of thing."

"I'm freaking people out enough," Luke said into her shoulder. "I didn't want to add, 'by the way, my family died last week. Pass the popcorn.'"

"You could've told me."

Luke sniffled. "I thought I just did."

"Before now, dork," Rory said affectionately, rubbing his back.

"Do you want to talk about them?"

Luke pulled back and rubbed at his eyes. "Not really," he said. "I mean, the last thing I said to Uncle Owen was rude and frustrated."

"That happens a lot," Rory said. "But don't dwell on it, because it's not as though you were rude and frustrated your whole life, were you?"

Luke was silent.

"You weren't," Rory replied. "Unless you swapped brains with someone very sweet and helpful very recently."

"I didn't want to be there any more," Luke said, "and I wasn't subtle about it." He let out a shaky laugh. "I'm sure there's a lesson in there somewhere about being careful what you wish for."

"I'd be dead, too, and the droids would've been in the hands of the Empire," Luke recited. "It doesn't really help."

"Last year, one of my friends was killed by the guy who did this," Rory said, pointing to her neck. "And I blamed myself. And then when he got me and Logan, I blamed myself again. I know that the hypothetical, 'If I had been there,' situations don't help. But beating yourself up doesn't, either."
