Luke wouldn't say that he had been spending the entire weekend hiding in his room, but he'd pretty much spent the entire weekend hiding in his room.

He'd call it "processing."

It looked a lot like brooding.

Yoda was in his tank doing the supportive pet thing. Or sleeping. It was kind of hard to tell.

"I didn't want to be there any more," Luke said, "and I wasn't subtle about it." He let out a shaky laugh. "I'm sure there's a lesson in there somewhere about being careful what you wish for."

"But if you had been there...." Rory said, and left it.

"I'd be dead, too, and the droids would've been in the hands of the Empire," Luke recited. "It doesn't really help."

"Last year, one of my friends was killed by the guy who did this," Rory said, pointing to her neck. "And I blamed myself. And then when he got me and Logan, I blamed myself again. I know that the hypothetical, 'If I had been there,' situations don't help. But beating yourself up doesn't, either."

Luke sighed. "I know," he said. "It's just...not really working."

"It'll get better. And I know I sound like a broken record," Rory said. "But I swear it does."

Luke looked very, very young when he finally met her eyes. "You promise?"

"Cross my heart and hope to lose my will to drink coffee," Rory swore.

That got a smile. "Sounds serious," he said.

"It's my most solemn vow," Rory said very seriously. "I could pinky-swear, too, if you'd like, but that's a weird Earth thing that I doubt anyone's explained to you."

Luke stared. "...you're right."

Rory smiled and held up her pinky finger. "Now, hold up your pinky like I am now."

Brow furrowed, Luke held out his right hand.

Rory hooked her pinky around his. "Okay, now I pinky swear that it gets better," she said. "Promises don't get more serious than this."

Luke smiled. "I believe you," he said, shaking her pinky.

"As you should," Rory said with a smile, retracting her hand. "I mean, I have coffee on the line here."

"Coffee's like a religion around here," Luke commented, then paused. "It's not, though, right?"

"I'm really not the person to ask about that," she replied.

"Have you ever tried caf?" Luke asked.

Rory nodded. "I still have some, actually. Courtesy of your father and some of his friends."

Luke bit his lip. "I'm sure at some point that will become less strange to hear."

"I'm sorry," Rory said, instantly apologetic. "Would it be better if I didn't mention him like that?"

"Not at all," Luke said, shaking his head. "I just had this...image in my mind of what he was like. Growing up I wondered if I looked like him, or if he was like Uncle Owen, or if he ever got in as much trouble as I seem to. It's bizarre to think of him as having been a real person."

Rory nodded. "I can imagine. And like I've said, talking to someone like...well, me, must be weird." She gave him a sheepish smile. "It's weird for me, anyway, to talk to my former boyfriend's son. But it's not a bad kind of weird."

"Good," Luke said, cheeks going a little pink. "I'd hate it if you decided you didn't want to talk with me any more."
