Not that he hadn't appreciated the effort, because he had, but Luke had to admit that his first joint birthday party with Leia had been a bit of an experience.

And not just because someone had left Janson unsupervised with the food. In his worst kitchen experiments with Gavin, Luke had never managed to turn something that shade of purple.

It had been nice to have some down time, though. Rogue Squadron's missions had increased in tempo and Luke had barely had time to breathe, let alone remember things like dates. The surprise part of the party had been complete: mostly because he'd forgotten it was his birthday at all. Leia had teased him about that for an hour.

He flopped onto his cot--a perk of being in command meant he didn't have to share his admittedly tiny quarters--and fiddled with something mechanical and complicated that Wedge had given him, enjoying time to himself. Artoo burbled happily in the corner, checking for new communications.

"I haven't been in the clinic since I arrived," Luke said with a small smile. "I'm being very good."

"You keep on being very good then."

"You too," Luke said. "Don't get squashed by a drop bear."

"I'll make sure to avoid them."

"And also watch out for the invasion of pudding, or whatever else Fandom has in mind for you," Luke said.

Mostly because he didn't want her to hang up.

"I'll keep an eye out for them," Jo assured him, then added because she wasn't in any particular hurry to end the call either. "Two if necessary."

"Good," Luke said with a smile. "I like my Jos in one piece."

"And I like my Lukes the same way."

"I'll be careful," he promised. "I have a whole squadron depending on me, too, now."

"They probably like their Lukes in one piece too," Jo said. "A whole squadron?"

"I'm in charge of the Rogues, now," Luke said, sounding proud. "At least for a little while. I'm not when Gavin becomes a Rogue in a few years."

He paused. "Only in Fandom does that sentence make sense."

"At least you'll have ready made blackmail material for that Gavin?" Jo suggested. "That's one advantage at least."

Luke laughed. "Oh, the poor kid," he said. "He doesn't know what's coming."

"You'll toughen him up soon enough."

"He'll be a great pilot," Luke replied, "and Force knows we can always use great pilots."

"You've definitely got at least one, so it's a start."

Luke blushed. "I do all right," he demurred.

"You do better than alright."

"I didn't even plan on being the squadron commander," Luke admitted. "Wedge and I were just having a friendly race. When it was over, he handed me command."

"Sounds like he trusts you a lot, to do that," Jo said.

"We were the only survivors from the first Death Star run," Luke said. "There's pretty much nothing I wouldn't do for the guy."

"Like keep him and the rest of the squadron in the original number of pieces?"

"I'm still working on that," Luke admitted. "The pilots are good, but so are the Imperials."

"You're better," Jo said. "In more ways than one."

He smiled. "I don't want to give you anything to worry about," he said quietly.
