Preserve Clearing [lunchtime]

After leaving Rory a message to meet for lunch in the clearing she'd mentioned to him, Luke had wandered down to J, GOB for the proper supplies.

Being a boy, they leaned heavily towards Things Stuck Between Bread and Things Made of Chocolate and not so much with the vegetables or fruit.

He plopped down on the grass and tried to process some of the people he'd met in the last few days: a frog, a giant turtle, a girl from the future (though not his), Gavin--who wasn't nine years old any more, apparently-- a Padawan from the past, and oh, let's not forget, his niece. What the hell, Fandom, what the hell.

The people in Platypus seemed to be pretty great, though -- and Annette seemed really excited about his date with Tori.

Not that he was nervous about that. At all.

Except for the part where he was.

His gaze rested on initials carved into a tree nearby and he fought the instinct to roll his eyes. Hopefully his father hadn't done anything stupid to Rory in the last few weeks.

He wasn't counting on it, though.

"Not really," she said, shrugging. "What's new with you?"

Luke's entire face went pink. "I have a date tomorrow."

Rory, obligingly, went, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! With who?"

"Tori," Luke replied. "We're going for coffee."

Because the boy was hugely creative, yes.

"Nice choice. And if she hurts you I'll kill her," Rory said with an incongruous smile.

She was kidding. And if she wasn't, she totally couldn't take Tori.

Luke smiled back. "I'll be fine," he said softly.

"And if she does anything stupid, I'll kick her in the head!" Rory offered.

"She's a ninja," Luke pointed out.

"Does she have coffee powers?" Rory countered.

"She's pretty good at manipulating orange juice," Luke said with a doofy smile.

Rory smiled. "I like that she makes you happy," she said, reaching over and squeezing his shoulder.

Luke blushed. "I like being happy," he said. "It's...a nice change."

"Enjoy it," Rory said, not at all wistfully.

Luke leaned over and wrapped her in a bear hug, not saying anything.

Rory dropped her head against his shoulder. "Jack left yesterday. He's not coming back. And I won't hear from him ever again."

"And it brought back not great memories, huh?" Luke asked, holding on tightly.

"Just a few," she mumbled.

He rubbed her back. "I brought pie," he murmured. "I told Jaina it helps with everything."

"It does," she said. "I've taught you well."

"I hadn't mentioned advanced pastry-throwing as an offensive move yet," Luke said with a small smile. "I figured you could teach her that yourself."

"Don't forget waffles," she said, grinning.
