Preserve Clearing [lunchtime]

After leaving Rory a message to meet for lunch in the clearing she'd mentioned to him, Luke had wandered down to J, GOB for the proper supplies.

Being a boy, they leaned heavily towards Things Stuck Between Bread and Things Made of Chocolate and not so much with the vegetables or fruit.

He plopped down on the grass and tried to process some of the people he'd met in the last few days: a frog, a giant turtle, a girl from the future (though not his), Gavin--who wasn't nine years old any more, apparently-- a Padawan from the past, and oh, let's not forget, his niece. What the hell, Fandom, what the hell.

The people in Platypus seemed to be pretty great, though -- and Annette seemed really excited about his date with Tori.

Not that he was nervous about that. At all.

Except for the part where he was.

His gaze rested on initials carved into a tree nearby and he fought the instinct to roll his eyes. Hopefully his father hadn't done anything stupid to Rory in the last few weeks.

He wasn't counting on it, though.

"Huh?"

"Well, he does," she said petulantly.

"You're out of your mind," Luke decided.

Diplomacy didn't run strong with the Skywalker boys.

"Am not!" Rory argued.

"Rory, you kind of are," Luke said quietly. "There's no way he's moving on. I've never seen a man so determined to be stuck in one place."

"He likes her and she's his age and they're perfect for each other and they're going to have wee Anaroselets."

Rory was an idiot.

Luke let out a slightly frustrated sigh and turned his full attention on her. "They're not," he said firmly.

"I just....argh." Rory sighed and fall back on the blanket. "I know. It's just easier to think he's moved on than that he just outright doesn't want to be with me."

Luke blinked. "Really?"

She nodded. "I need logic behind things. I need him to be a jackass."

"He excels at that," Luke replied, rolling his eyes, "but I'm not sure he's trying to be one right now."

"I know," she murmured. "I need him to be hurtful. I need him to not be heartbreaking and understandable."

Luke bit his lower lip. "You'd rather he was Vader?" he asked, voice shaky.

"No," she said so emphatically she was almost shouting. "I just want him to...not be Anakin. It hurts too much."

Luke was really trying to understand.

He just...didn't.

"I'm sorry."

"I'd offer to kick him, but..." Luke said, flailing a little.

"Don't worry about it," Rory said, shaking her head. "You, mister, have a date. So what are you doing for her?"

"We're going for coffee tomorrow afternoon," Luke said, "so there's not too much pressure."

He hoped.

"Flowers?" she suggested.

Luke nodded. "Do flowers have specific meanings here?" he asked. "I don't want her to think I'm proposing marriage or secretly hate her or something."

"Stay away from red roses, as I think they might be a little intense for you," she suggested. "Yellow means friendship, daisies are innocence and sweetness, forget-me-nots are obvious...."
