Preserve Clearing [lunchtime]

After leaving Rory a message to meet for lunch in the clearing she'd mentioned to him, Luke had wandered down to J, GOB for the proper supplies.

Being a boy, they leaned heavily towards Things Stuck Between Bread and Things Made of Chocolate and not so much with the vegetables or fruit.

He plopped down on the grass and tried to process some of the people he'd met in the last few days: a frog, a giant turtle, a girl from the future (though not his), Gavin--who wasn't nine years old any more, apparently-- a Padawan from the past, and oh, let's not forget, his niece. What the hell, Fandom, what the hell.

The people in Platypus seemed to be pretty great, though -- and Annette seemed really excited about his date with Tori.

Not that he was nervous about that. At all.

Except for the part where he was.

His gaze rested on initials carved into a tree nearby and he fought the instinct to roll his eyes. Hopefully his father hadn't done anything stupid to Rory in the last few weeks.

He wasn't counting on it, though.

"Little bit," he said, still snickering. "I'm not five years old, much as you might like me to be."

"Noooo but you're Lukey," she said, smoothing his hair.

"Who has a date tomorrow," he reminded her with a smile. "I'm practically a grown up."

"Bear with me," she said with a teeny little smile. "I'm not used to it. Don't care if you're older than me and always have been."

Luke leaned in and gave her a kiss on the forehead. "I know," he said. "What else is new in the land of Rory?"

"Absolutely nothing," Rory said. She smirked. "Jack kissed me before he left. Think I should tell your dad to watch him turn funny colors?"

Luke's jaw dropped. "I think it'll be worse than handing him a banjo."

"Do you really want to do that to him?" Luke asked.

"Bonus points if he's drinking something?" she tried.

Rory sighed. "He's overly sensitive. Jack's only a friend and has never been anything else."

"And you want to check and see if you still have that kind of a pull on him," Luke guessed.

Rory picked at the grass. "...no?" she tried.

Luke gave her a Look.

"He hurt me first!" she tried.

Luke sighed. "Okay, I know he's about nineteen kinds of frustrating and you shouldn't have to be the bigger person here, but...be the bigger person here? Maybe? At least consider it?"

Rory sighed. "Fine."

Luke leaned over to kiss Rory's cheek. "Thank you," he said quietly.

"He should still know," she grumbled. "I'll get hell someday if he doesn't."

Luke leaned back against his hands. "I guess it's all in the delivery," he decided. "More a good friend saying goodbye, less 'I'm getting kissed and you're not.'"

Luke stared at her. "Like he and I are going to talk about that," he said, rolling his eyes. "Who would be kissing him, anyway?"
