Luke was in his room with the door cracked open a bit as he worked up his courage to deliver the flowers he'd gotten for Jo to her.

Artoo was in the corner letting out squeaks of droid-y amusement as he replayed what he thought of as the greatest hits of Luke's weekend.

Luke wasn't as amused.

The pillow nodded. "My aunt and uncle were very strict," it said. "And this summer...was kinda crap."

"But you had a girlfriend!" Z argued.

Luke sighed. "I wasn't in the right headspace to enjoy it," he said. He pulled the pillow from his head. "You can keep a secret," he decided. "This won't surprise you, but my family's pretty screwed up."

"No, really?" Z asked wryly. "I never would have guessed. Your dad looks practically our age, not to mention moody as hell and occasionally kind of mean, and I have no idea what's going on with that sister of yours."

Luke took a deep breath. "Yeah, our story makes Lifetime movies look fairly tame," he said. "My father's a Jedi, right? And they weren't supposed to get married. Since there's a Leia and I, you can kind of guess how much attention he paid to those rules."

He bit his lip. "So there was a war and the Jedi got exterminated by Darth Vader for, you know, existing, and Leia and I were separated after we were born to protect us from him and his boss, who'd taken control of the galaxy. Great guy. Really."

"Pfft, rules," said the police cadet. "Who needs them?" Z frowned. "Darth Vader, wait, isn't he the old Ethics teacher? From before your dad came?"

Luke nodded. "That's him. He came because he recognized my last name. The Emperor'd thought that Anakin hadn't had children. I was a threat to his power."

As an 18 year old kid with three weeks of Jedi training. Some threat.

"So he sent Vader here to give me a choice." He bit his lip. "Last November he did. My choice was supposed to be joining the Dark Side or getting killed. I didn't really like those choices."

"Yeah, no, I can't see that you would," Z agreed.

Luke flexed his glove. "So he cut my hand off," he said, "then, um, told me that he was my father."

Z was totally at a loss for words for several seconds. Then, "You let me think you cut your own hand off?!"

After another few seconds she screechd, "He said WHAT??"

Z had no words. Well, maybe a few. "But. But. I met your dad. He tried to teach me how to fly. Twice."

"Welcome to my world," Luke said. "I had a bit of a problem imagining the guy who'd dated Rory and graduated from here turning into, you know, seven feet of evil."

Z shook her head to clear it. "Okay, exactly how much time travel are we talking, here? Because I only know one Rory and she's like our age...as is your dad. Ow. My brain."

"Okay, Rory and Anakin dated when my father was a senior and she was a junior," Luke said. "Then he went back home, met my mother, turned into, you know, Darth Vader, and tromped around the galaxy for eighteen years while I grew up oblivious on Tatooine, the planet with no girls. I came here and apparently only about four days had passed in Fandom time." He grinned. "Okay so far?"

Z took a moment to remember that there was a two-year-old her on the other side of the continent. "I'm good. Wait. No I'm not. What about your sister?"

"She grew up as a princess on Alderaan," Luke said with a smile, "and no idea she was a Skywalker. I didn't know until I went home after the whole hand thing. Ben didn't think that was information I needed, apparently." He rolled his eyes. "Ben didn't think I needed to know a lot of things."

He bit his lip. "Father blew up her planet to get Leia to talk. It's why she doesn't exactly get along with him."

Go figure.

"We've had a few things like that happen, too," Z said. "Sirius. KO-35 had to be completely evacuated once. But Jesus. Wait, your sister got to be a princess while you grew up in that desert place with no girls? Ack."

"I think she won the coin toss," Luke said, nodding. "But I got the Jedi to watch me." He frowned. "And the last name like a giant target on my back. Huh. I'm sure there was a plan there somewhere."

"You'd be surprised at how often the people in charge are in fact incredibly dense," Z said, thinking of Cruger. Then she picked up a shoe to throw at Luke. "You told me you cut off your own arm!"

"Because 'hi, turns out my father's Darth Vader, PS: he's really good with a lightsaber' was something I really wanted to say," Luke retorted as the shoe bounced off his shoulder.

"Don't make me kick your butt," Z warned him. Then she took a deep breath. "Okay, okay, so, why isn't your dad dressing like an evil overlord--which, hey, apparently he was--and why are you speaking to him after he cut off your arm?" Yes, Z was a little hung up on that.

Because Luke was too forgiving by half.

"Because there was still good in him," Luke said with a soft smile. "When I went home at Spring Break it was to stop a new Death Star from being built. And to see if I could get my father to turn away from the Dark Side." He shrugged. "I just asked him. Leia almost killed him for trying, I think."

Z was liking Leia more and more. "Which I'm guessing he did...so was the crazy black get-up like a stasis suit?" she guessed. "Is that why he doesn't look old enough to have a kid your age?"

Luke shook his head. "Not exactly. He took me to see the Emperor, which wasn't at all part of my plan, and then the Emperor tried to get me to turn to the Dark Side again. When I said no, he electrocuted me. That's when Father stepped in. He took the punishment--at least until he tossed the Emperor down an air shaft." He chewed on his lower lip. "And then he died. The Anakin who's here is my father, but in a cloned body the Emperor had made for reasons I'm not going to think about."
