Not that he hadn't appreciated the effort, because he had, but Luke had to admit that his first joint birthday party with Leia had been a bit of an experience.

And not just because someone had left Janson unsupervised with the food. In his worst kitchen experiments with Gavin, Luke had never managed to turn something that shade of purple.

It had been nice to have some down time, though. Rogue Squadron's missions had increased in tempo and Luke had barely had time to breathe, let alone remember things like dates. The surprise part of the party had been complete: mostly because he'd forgotten it was his birthday at all. Leia had teased him about that for an hour.

He flopped onto his cot--a perk of being in command meant he didn't have to share his admittedly tiny quarters--and fiddled with something mechanical and complicated that Wedge had given him, enjoying time to himself. Artoo burbled happily in the corner, checking for new communications.

It always worried Rikku when she called over major dimensional rifts that somehow, the call wasn't going to go through. Well, if it didn't, she'd just send an e-mail, then!

... Somehow, that seemed perfectly logical to her.

"Hiya!" Rikku bounced. "Happy birthday! Except I wrote it down as today or tomorrow so maybe I'm calling early? Uh. In which case, happy almost birthday! Hi!"

Jo wasn't sure if it was actually the right day wherever Luke was, but in any case it was here, so there she was ringing.

"Rikku!" Luke's voice was filled with glee. "It's today. Thanks!"

"Hey," Jo replied, smiling. "I hear there might be a birthday boy out there somewhere."

"If there is, he can't have any of my presents," Luke declared. "I was here first. Hi, you."

"Happy Birthday, you," Jo said. "Get anything interesting?"

"Artoo didn't show my greatest hits at the birthday party?" Luke replied. "That was a pretty great gift. And Leia gave me something with lots of moving parts to put together."

"He's probably just waiting for someone to match his price," Jo warned. "That sounds fun. Did she tell you what it is or is that supposed to be a surprise?"

"Ooooh, good point," Luke said, wincing. "And I think it makes a little droid, but I'll have to wait and see. How are you?"

"I'm good," Jo replied. "Somehow managed to acquire a dog."

Jet, who had been lying on Jo's bed, helpfully barked.

"Aww," Luke replied. "Win it in a card game? Does it have a name?"

"More like he followed me home and wouldn't leave," Jo said, scratching behind Jet's ears. "He's called Jet."

"It's good to have friends," Luke said, "even short, furry ones. Is it jet like the color or like the aircraft?"

"It was the colour," Jo said. "But after the first time he decided to take me for a w-a-l-k..." She was taking no chances of him wanting to go for another one just yet.

Luke laughed. "He was in a bit of a hurry, huh?" he guessed. "Sounds like fun. Right now we're so busy I'd kill a goldfish. I'm hardly ever at home."

"Just a little one," Jo replied dryly. "Poor thing."

"Has he made any friends?" Luke asked. "There were roughly ninety bazillion pets around that place when I left."

It was much more interesting to talk about Fandom than what he was up to, he decided.

"Not of the four-legged kind yet," Jo said. "Although he'll schmooze with anyone."

"Hoping they brought him food, probably," Luke said with a laugh. "I think that was Vladdie's primary motivation."

"You're probably right," Jo replied. "It's hard not to notice the bottomless stomach or the continual shedding."

"But if you got a hairless dog, it'd look like Chad's cat and no one wants that," Luke replied. "How are you, aside from your new friend?"

"I'm good," Jo said. "Things have been pretty quiet, well, except for the usual run of weirdness."
