After a few hours poking around on the X-Wing with Artoo and a quick check to see if Leia had written--she had, and there was still no sign of Han--Luke flung himself onto his bed and began to practice with the Force.

Yoda was not excited to be one of the things chosen to be juggled.

Seeing Luke distracted, Artoo made his way stealthily towards the door.

"Don't even think about it," Luke said sternly. "Last time you got out, you came back covered in cake."

Artoo whistled innocently. "No," Luke replied.

Artoo made sulky noises and rolled back towards the corner.

Luke blushed. "I didn't say I was particularly proud of not liking the guy," he muttered. "I just don't think anyone's good enough for Rory. It's nothing terribly personal."

He grabbed onto the other topic with both hands. "I like long stories," he said hopefully.

"Well, get over yourself, because Bridge is cool," Z told him. "Um. Did I ever tell you I used to be homeless?"

"As soon as he stops dating Rory, I'll reconsider," Luke said with a humorless smile. "And no, you didn't." His eyes were sympathetic. "I'm sorry."

"Your logic is not like our Earth logic. Would you rather Rory was alone? And, yeah." She looked down at the plate in her hands. "I was. And there was this guy, Jack? He was like me. Well, not just like me, he was African-American and he could walk through walls instead of making copies of himself, but...we were both freaks. So we stuck together."

"Sticking together makes sense," Luke said, nodding. "And someone with Jack's abilities would be helpful when you're hungry, right?"

"Yeah, but it didn't really work out that way because Jack was more concerned about other people. So, we stole stuff? But not for us. We'd give it all away and then we were still hungry and had only the one outfit apiece. And then we got caught by SPD."

"Who weren't impressed by the altruism," Luke guessed.

Z shook her head. "Nope. And, see, our parents worked for SPD, back when it first came to Earth, and they were in some sort of lab accident--that's why Jack and I are the way they are. But no one told us that. Bridge and I found it out on our own. Commander Cruger just offered me and Jack training to be SPD officers instead of jail time. Like probation, only with homework."

"And Jack turned them down?" Luke asked.

"Bingo," Z told him. "He's...not too bright sometimes."

Luke shrugged. "Not necessarily. Some people just don't do groups." He smiled a little wistfully. "My friend Han, for one."

"Is Han really proud?" Z asked him. "Jack's really proud."

"He has his moments," Luke admitted. "Mostly he just likes going his own way. He's a smuggler."

"So they've got the 'lawbreaker' thing in common, too," Z observed. "We should get them together some time. When Jack's not in tiny card jail, that is."

"Card jail?" Luke repeated, puzzled. He pressed his lips together. "Han is a bit...indisposed right now anyway. Vader dropped him in carbonite."

"Oh, SPD imprisons people in pocket dimensions inside little little cards." Z set her plate down on her desk and held up her fingers in the approximate shape and size of a capture card. "Like this. Vader? The teacher guy? And what's carbonite?"

"Handy," Luke said, looking a little weirded out. "And Vader is the totally evil teacher guy, yeah. He dropped Han into liquid carbon, then froze them both solid." His eyes flashed. "And then took him away. We still don't know where."

"Yeah, they can just file criminals until it's time to release them. Much easier on them." Z was so used to the idea of capture cards she didn't really understand why they weirded people out so much. "That's awful."

Luke nodded. "Vader's a petty bastard sometimes." He thought about that statement.

"All of the time," he amended.

"Why would they let a guy like that teach?" Z asked, as had so many before her.

Luke had a much better idea why now, but he shrugged. "Fandom's strange," he said. "Maybe they had to check off that 'totally evil' box on the diversity form."
