Room 317 [after classes]

After an interesting conversation with his father early in the morning, Luke had gone for a long run.

And then an even longer session alone with the punching bag.

And then he'd tried some meditation.

Now? He'd spread parts to a small droid out all over the floor, back carefully turned away from the half of the room that was supposed to have a Z in it, and fiddled around with electronics.

Loud Corellian rock was blaring from his stereo and out through the open door.

If you asked him? He was fine.

"I don't even know," Luke repeated with a sigh.

She knew that sigh well. Pushing away from the doorway, she cleared herself a small area on the floor to sit, and said, "Talk to me?"

"He's happy," Luke said, trying to get his thoughts into some kind of order, "and I know this is what Rory had wanted back when she thought it was impossible, and I didn't even know my mother, so this shouldn't feel like any kind of betrayal of her, right?"

Jaina made a face, maybe revealing that she'd had the same thought. "I think it's allowed," she said slowly. "Between the holos and Evey, I'd think it would be somewhere in your head."

"It's nothing I could tell either of them," he said quietly. "You should have seen his face when I told him Evey was here. I've never seen blood drain so quickly."

"At least he knows?" Jaina tried. "I wasn't sure if I should try to warn him, if I should try to warn her, or hope they never managed to meet." She paused, and asked, "How are you doing with that?"

"She's taking his class. I had to tell him," Luke replied, running a hand through his hair. "I like Evey. She's easy to talk to. But it does have me wondering more about my mother. And the only one with the answers is locked up tighter than Jabba's palace."

"He doesn't talk about her to you?" Jaina asked. She'd heard some things, but it hadn't occurred to her till now that Luke might not be hearing the same.

He shook his head. "Going through the pictures in the holo was the longest stretch of time he'd ever spent talking to me about her."

She had a feeling she knew the next topic of conversation she had to take up with her grandfather now. "It's your mother," she said, shaking her head. "You have a right to know."

"It took him months to even tell me her name," Luke said. "I knew it before then, but he just doesn't talk about her."

Pause. "Does he talk to you about her?" No jealousy there, nope.

"Little things, here and there. There's been a lot of piecing things together," she said, and kind of thought now that it was only that way because she'd been the one not wanting to push for information.

"He holds onto those memories like he can exchange them for Alderaanian artifacts," Luke bitched.

"If you were him, would you be willing to give up that sort of information that easily?" Jaina asked.

"To my son? Yes," Luke said stubbornly.

She didn't even really disagree with him, she just knew enough of the story to understand Anakin's side of it, at least to some degree. "Well, let's face it, this family's never known how to handle problems in any way resembling healthy," she admitted.

"You mean taking something down to the bolts isn't the normal way to deal with news?" Luke asked, a smile curving up the sides of his lips.

"I'm not saying it's not valid," Jaina smiled. Not that she'd ever done that, really.

Luke smiled back. "Not that you've ever done the same thing?" he guessed.

"You did see my room before I moved most of the stuff down to the garage, right?" she asked, assuming he could figure out the rest for himself.

"You mean the garage hadn't relocated to the third floor?"

She made a face at him and smiled. "It was an improvement on the way my room looked back home," she said, barely managing not to say at the Academy. And really, that was more home than Coruscant anyway. "I've learned some things about organization since then."

"Don't let Rory get a hold of you," Luke said with his first genuine smile of the day. "She'll have the entire place color coded."

"Thanks for the tip. I like my system, I'll stick to it." There was no system. She liked it that way.

"It's a memory exercise," Luke said, waving his hand towards his mess. "I know where every piece is."
