Room 317 [after classes]

After an interesting conversation with his father early in the morning, Luke had gone for a long run.

And then an even longer session alone with the punching bag.

And then he'd tried some meditation.

Now? He'd spread parts to a small droid out all over the floor, back carefully turned away from the half of the room that was supposed to have a Z in it, and fiddled around with electronics.

Loud Corellian rock was blaring from his stereo and out through the open door.

If you asked him? He was fine.

"Oh," Jo said. "And that's...bad?"

"I don't know," Luke practically wailed. "Is it totally stupid to miss my mother?"

"It's not," Jo said softly, nudging him towards his bed.

He kind of collapsed onto it, holding onto Jo's hand like it was the only thing keeping him anchored.

Which wasn't too far from the truth.

"There's a student running around with her face, too," he whispered. "I kind of hate this, maybe, a little."

Jo sat next to him, rubbing his back. "I don't blame you. That must just make it harder."

Luke nodded before dropping his head into her lap with a tired sigh. "I'm tired of pretending I'm fine," he said.

"You don't have to," Jo said seriously, running her fingers through his hair. "You don't have to be fine either."

"But they want me to be fine," he insisted stubbornly. "There's no reason I should be taking this personally. I practically threw them at each other to begin with."

"Still doesn't mean you have to be."

Luke let out another unhappy sigh. "Good," he said softly, curling closer. "Because I'm kind of not."

"Hey, I know how you feel," Jo said softly. "Least some of it. You think my mom was the only one chasing of potential suitors?"

Luke gave Jo a small smile. "I remember something about a shotgun and a certain vice principal."

"Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty to defend a lady's honour."

"And sometimes you don't want anyone stepping into that particular place," Luke replied, "even if he says she's not."

Jo nodded. "That vice principal wasn't the first shotgun incident."

Luke smiled up at her. "I don't think I can borrow your technique, though."

Jo smiled back. "That could make things a little awkward, yeah."

"And I love Rory, but this is just going to take some getting used to. I've always known my father as kind of the brooding loner type."

"He might still brood? Just a bit less alone."

Luke nodded. "It's good to see him smile," he admitted, snuggling closer. "Weird, but good."

"Kinda creepy and unsettling, huh?"

"Like imagining Professor Winchester in a tutu."

Jo tilted her head to the side. "That scarring?"

"He was humming before I came in."

"That's scary."
