Luke was certainly not pacing in front of the gates as he waited for Lyra to arrive.

And if he was it was only because he hadn't checked on the starfighter for a week. No other reason.

He didn't know it, but a total lack of slickness also ran in the family.

The squirrels, bored of watching the pirate and the radio voting, began tossing acorns at Luke.

So now there was some terribly manly flinching going on, too.

[OOC: For Lyra, please.]

Lyra, dressed in a sensible tartan skirt and a peter-pan collar blouse, walked down the lane to the gates. She saw Luke pacing, and hurried her steps, glancing at her handwavily acquired watch to make sure she wasn't late. Pan whispered that they weren't.

She hurried anyway.

"Luke!" she called, still a few yards away. "Hullo. I'm not late, am I?"

"Not at all," Luke replied, grinning. "I was early."

"Oh, good." Lyra gestured to the gates, grinning. "Where to?"

"The apartments in town," Luke said, bouncing on his toes. "The ship's up on the roof."

Lyra laughed. "Lead on, then." She fell into step beside him, reaching into her messenger bag. "Oh! I brought cookies. For the walk. Want one?"

From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"Oooh, please," Luke said, holding out his hand. "What kind are they?" He smiled. "Not that it really matters. I've never met a cookie I didn't like."

"Um, those ones are ginger snaps, and the lighter ones are sugar cookies." Lyra took a sugar cookie and munched it contentedly as they walked along.

Luke took a ginger snap and polished it off in somewhat record time. "Thank you," he said, grinning, then pointed towards a staircase. "Up this way."

From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
Lyra followed Luke up the stairs, shielding her eyes against the glare of sunlight over he edge of the roof. She bit her lip in anticipation, wondering what on earth a starfighter would look like.

From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
Luke walked over to a giant tarp-covered something on the far side of the roof and removed the covering.

"This is an X-wing," he said proudly.

The ship had obviously seen better days.

Lyra's jaw dropped. Not even in any of the other worlds she'd been to had she seen anything like it.

"Wow." She moved closer to the craft. "How does it go?"

From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"With the engines," Luke said, pointing them out. "The wings split for added coolness better manueverablity." He pulled a ladder over. "Want to look in the cockpit? with an html code that will actually work, yay!"

Date: 2006-09-13 09:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
Lyra clambered up the ladder, almost before he was done talking. "Yeah, of course!"

She didn't climb in, that'd be rude, but she leaned over and poked around, being careful not to actually push any of the buttons.

From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
Luke leaned over her shoulder and pointed out what the various buttons and levers did. "You can sit in it if you promise not to push the ignition," he said, eyes sparkling.

Lyra laughed. "That bad, am I? I've never seen anything like this. Ever. It's amazing."

She climbed in, making sure she came nowhere near the ignition. She listened avidly to what Luke told her. SHe brushed her hair out of her face with the hand that had been leaning against the exterior of the x-wing, leaving a dirty smudge.

Luke grinned back. "It's pretty new to me, too." He sat down on the nose of the ship--the ground crew would be having a fit--and continued explaining the different parts. "That's communications to talk to the droid who's um, not with me, and weapons, and navigation, and that's the hyperdrive."

Date: 2006-09-13 10:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
"What's 'droid'? And hipe- hyperdrive?" Lyra asked, stumbling over the unfamiliar word.

Date: 2006-09-13 10:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"A droid's a machine--in the case of the X-wing, one that sits back there--" he pointed to the empty socket in the middle of the ship, "and helps with flying, targeting and maintenance. Sometimes while you're flying." He smiled. "And the hyperdrive's what allows me to get here at all. It makes the ship go faster than light."

Date: 2006-09-13 10:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
Lyra looked suitably impressed. "The scholars in my world say nothing can go faster than light."

Pan scurried up over back of the seat and into the droid socket, sniffing and poking around. If anything, though, he was more cautious than Lyra.

"So how did you come to be at Fandom?"

[ooc: if there's a particular direction you want the conversation to go, feel free to drag Lyra along, kicking and screaming. I'm easy like that. ^.^]

"The people in the organization I belong to decided that I needed more eduation than I'd gotten at home," Luke said carefully. "They found out about this school and sent me off almost immediately." He blew out a breath. "Turns out that going to Fandom is a bit of a family tradition. My father went here years ago." He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Or two weeks ago. It's been very, very confusing."

Date: 2006-09-13 10:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
"Really? Huh." Lyra's face showed polite interest, and a little puzzlement at the time differences, but none of the despair or grief that so many other students felt when Annakin was mentioned.

"It must be nice to be carrying on a family tradition."

Date: 2006-09-13 10:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"Wish I'd known it was one before I got here," Luke said a little bitterly. "It would've saved everyone a lot of heartache." His shoulders had released some of the tension they had been carrying, though. "I managed to traumatize most of the older students by telling them that Anakin had been dead as long as I've been alive. I didn't know they knew him."

Date: 2006-09-13 11:03 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
Lyra blinked. She certainly hadn't been expecting that. "Of course you didn't. I mean, if he'd been dead all your life, how were you to know where he'd gone to school?"

She continued, all indignant on his behalf. "I think it was out of line for them to take that out on you."

Date: 2006-09-13 11:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"They didn't mean it, either," Luke said. "It just made last week...awkward." He gave a half-hearted laugh. "I think Ms. Gilmore-Danes thought I was her grandson for a moment there. My father and her daughter used to date."

Date: 2006-09-13 11:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
"Ms. Gilmore... Rory? Rory used to date your father?" Lyra let out a disbelieving bark of laughter. "What a small world. Rory's my big sister here."

Her eyebrows rose. "Yeah, I can see how that'd be awkward."

Date: 2006-09-13 11:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
Luke laughed. "My big brother couldn't stand my father, apparently. Which also wasn't exactly I wanted to hear." He leaned back against his hands. "So that's my tale of woe--what brought you here?"

From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
Lyra was glad to see Luke laughing. This past week must have been hard for him.

"Let me climb out and I'll show you." When they were both sitting on the rooftop underneath the x-wing, Lyra reached into her messenger bag and pulled out what looked to be a large golden compass. She handed it to Luke.

"That's my alethiometer. I used to be able to tell the future with it, but I can't anymore." She smiled tightly. "So I'm here to figure out how to use it again."

Date: 2006-09-14 05:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
Luke let out a low whistle. "You could tell the future?"

Date: 2006-09-14 10:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
"Yeah, a bit. I never asked it too much about what was going to happen. More like, what was going on somewhere else, or what someone was up to at the moment. But saying it tells the future is quicker." She grinned, and some of the tension around her eyes went away.

Date: 2006-09-14 10:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"Neat," Luke said, smiling. "I can see why you'd want to get the, um, alethiometer to work again." He made a mental note to ask Rory if Jedi were supposed to be able to tell the future.

Date: 2006-09-14 11:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
"Yeah... It was the only thing I ever did well. Other than lie. I'm good at that, too." Lyra half-smiled.

"I helped Dean with a fake jailbreak in Criminal Justice class today!" Luke said, grinning. "I can be very, very sneaky."

All evidence to the contrary, of course.

Date: 2006-09-14 11:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
"A what? Why were you jail-breaking?" Lyra didn't know Luke well enough to judge on the 'sneaky' front. Maybe all the puppy-like mannerisms were a clever ruse.

Date: 2006-09-14 11:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"We were divided into criminals and law enforcement," Luke elaborated. "There were a few too many criminals, so Dean and I decided to break a fellow law-breaker out. Had to some fast talking to get John away from the fake law enforcement." Luke paused. "Well, Dean did most of the talking. He didn't think I looked terribly sneaky."

Date: 2006-09-14 11:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
"Which Dean?" Lyra asked. With all the people of similars names (three Petes!) and look alikes, Lyra had learned to ask for clarification. "You? Not sneaky? I have it on good authority that you're very, very sneaky."

Date: 2006-09-14 11:25 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"Dean who looks like Alec," Luke clarified. "Not Dean who looks like Sam, Dean's brother." He paused. "I'm pretty sure something in my brain just snapped saying that. And I'm totally sneaky. I broke a princess out of a prison cell a few weeks ago! And we didn't die!"

He was a little proud of himself about that last part.

Date: 2006-09-14 11:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
"Okay, Dean-who-looks-like-Alec is Dean Winchester. Dean-who-looks-like-Sam is Dean Forrester. He's my roommate."

Lyra laughed; Luke reminded her of Roger a little, all fun and not an ounce of guile in his body. "Did you? That must have been something to see. Are you very important then, like a knight? Only knights get to rescue princesses in stories. And who is 'we'?"

Date: 2006-09-14 11:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"I'm going to be a Jedi," Luke said, eyes shining. "Which is a kind of knight in my galaxy." He paused. "Or was. My father was one. That's why he died." He ran a hand through his hair, anxious to switch subjects. "And the princess was being held by an evil, evil man--as princesses often are--and was slated for execution, which was just plain stupid. So me and my friend Han and his friend Chewbacca went to rescue her." He smiled. "It didn't go quite according to plan, but don't tell Dean that. Um, either Dean, actually."

Date: 2006-09-15 12:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] daemonridden.livejournal.com
Lyra raised one eyebrow. "I won't. Tell." She was moderately serious; she doubted it would ever come up.

"Han, Chew- uh, Chewbacca. Such odd names. Not at all like 'Luke.' Where is the princess now?"

Date: 2006-09-15 12:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tatooine-doofus.livejournal.com
"She's helping to run a rebellion back home," Luke said with a small smile. "Probably still yelling at Han, too."
