Roof of MCA [afternoon]

Luke had been late to his final training session with his father: setting up logistics with Leia for his trip back home had taken longer than he thought.

Any doubts he might've had about Anakin understanding the importance of the day were erased when his father began talking immediately and babbled through a lifetime of Jedi teachings for four straight hours.

Luke had never heard Anakin talk so much.

"The comm will work, you know," he'd said gently.

"It didn't when I went back," Anakin had replied. "I don't want you to be unprepared."

Then he'd lectured for another hour about meditation techniques, and using the Force to fly, and hibernation, and healing, and places to look for Force-sensitive beings. It would have been funny if Anakin hadn't been so deadly serious about the entire thing.

After a lightsaber practice session that'd lasted far too long--neither had been willing to think about last times, and they'd always been more at their best when facing each other with blades instead--Anakin had told Luke to meet him on the roof of MCA.

So that's where Luke was, breeze shifting his robe around him as he waited for his father to reappear.

Anakin arrived a few minutes later, hair still damp from the shower. He gave Luke a smile and waved his hand at the shuttle. "Happy graduation."

Luke's forehead wrinkled. "Huh?"

"The shuttle's yours," Anakin said, looking very amused.

More staring.

Finally: "Really?"

"Really," Anakin repeated, laughing. "Did you think I was going to make you hitchhike home or something?"

"...maybe," Luke said, giggling. "The shuttle, though? How will you get home?"

"I am home," Anakin said quietly. "I have no interest in going back to our galaxy. My place is here."

Luke looked up at him, eyes shining. "In that case, thank you for the ridiculously generous gift, Dad."

Anakin reached out to tousle Luke's hair. "You're moving on to the next stage of your life," he said. "The least I could do is provide the transportation."

"That's one of the lamest things you've ever said," Luke said, but he looked beyond happy as he ran his hands over the shuttle's sides.

"I left the speech making to your mother," Anakin said. "Go inside. I made a few modifications."

"Of course you did," Luke said, bounding up the ramp as soon as it hit the ground.

Anakin followed more slowly, grinning to himself as Luke exclaimed over system upgrades and walls that had been knocked out.

His time on the shuttle had been well spent.

"And what did you do to the engines?" Luke asked from the cockpit, grinning from ear to ear. "I know you couldn't have left those alone."

"They're not X-Wing fast," Anakin said, then winked, "but they're as close as I could come in a ship this large."

"You're the best," Luke breathed. "Han is going to go nova at this. He thinks he drives the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy."

That particular benefit hadn't even occurred to Anakin. He looked terribly pleased as he sat down in the co-pilot's chair. "Try not to rub it in too often," he said.

He didn't mean a word of it.

"You'd love it if I did," Luke said with a laugh. "Don't pretend otherwise."

"I don't like the guy," Anakin said with a shrug. "Never had."

"That became pretty obvious when you dropped him in carbonite," Luke said.

Anakin shrugged again. "Leia could do better."

"Leia loves Han," Luke said firmly. "Get over it."

Anakin chewed on his lip. "There's something else I need to tell you, and you won't like it," he said finally.

Luke raised an eyebrow. "What is it?"

"Yoda passed away while I was visiting him," Anakin said.

"With a lightsaber through him?" Luke replied shrilly.

"Oh, thank you very much for that vote of confidence," Anakin snapped back. "He was 900 years old, Luke!"

"He was fine when I saw him," Luke retorted.

"I DIDN'T KILL HIM," Anakin shouted, slapping his hand down on the top of the console. "He probably died just to be annoying."

"Yeah," Luke started, "that sounds like..."

He trailed off because it kind of did.

"He's really gone?" he said instead.

Anakin nodded, eyes full of sorrow.

"I'm the last of the Jedi?" Luke asked, voice very sad.

"You're the first of the new Jedi," Anakin said, reaching out and putting his hand on Luke's shoulder.
