Luke was putting the last of his belongings into bags and boxes and trying not to be too upset about leaving Fandom forever tomorrow morning.

Outside his alcove, Artoo was selling copies of Fandom's Greatest Humiliations over the last two years for what he felt was a very reasonable price.

Whenever the melancholy threatened to overwhelm Luke, he'd look over at the little droid who'd begin to whistle "Doe, a Deer."

Artoo wasn't big on feeling sorry for yourself.

"School was never really my thing," Luke admitted, "but I do wish I felt a little more prepared."

"I think you'll do just fine," Lana said seriously. "I'd be willing to bet on it even."

Luke grinned. "Thanks," he said. "Have a niece around here who seems well-adjusted and sane gives me some confidence."

She laughed again. "Yeah, that is the oddest thing. I actually haven't run into anyone from Smallville here except Chloe, much less nieces or whatevers."

"I'd offer you some of my family," Luke said, "but I like you."

Her laugh was a little rueful this time. "Well... I like your father. He's been really good to me. But, you know, I usually think people are lucky just to have family."

Luke nodded vigorously. "I didn't have any when I arrived in Fandom. Now I have one of the most ridiculous family trees around, and I wouldn't give it up for anything."

"Enjoy them," Lana said with a smile. "Insanity and all."

"My stepmother is three months younger than I am," Luke said with a grin. "I watched her graduate last year. I love the insanity."

Lana nodded. "The people who do well at Fandom are those who manage to embrace the insanity. Not quite sure what it says about us, but it's true."

"Nothing healthy," Luke laughed.

"Sad, but true," she said with a smile.

"Enjoy the time you still have here," Luke said, moving closer, "because no one'll ever believe the stories."

"I know," she said. "Especially since I'm not going back to Smallville where at least they're used to odd."

"I've broken a couple friends brains by introducing them to people they'll meet in a few years," Luke admitted, "though I've kept my sister's daughter to myself."

Lana nodded. "You never can tell what will happen here."

"Exactly," Luke said, running a hand through his hair. "I suppose I should get back to packing..."

"Yeah," Lana said with a sigh. "I wish you could stay. I'll miss you."

"I'll miss you, too," Luke replied. "May the Force be with you, Lana."
