After a few hours poking around on the X-Wing with Artoo and a quick check to see if Leia had written--she had, and there was still no sign of Han--Luke flung himself onto his bed and began to practice with the Force.

Yoda was not excited to be one of the things chosen to be juggled.

Seeing Luke distracted, Artoo made his way stealthily towards the door.

"Don't even think about it," Luke said sternly. "Last time you got out, you came back covered in cake."

Artoo whistled innocently. "No," Luke replied.

Artoo made sulky noises and rolled back towards the corner.

Artoo whistled with glee.

"He's kind of like a puppy sometimes," Luke said. "Sorry about that."

Z hesistantly patted Artoo's dome. "Thank you, Artoo." Then she asked Luke, "Have you taught him to make the purple pancakes yet?"

Artoo whistled again and raced back to the machine. "He figured those out right away," Luke said, grinning. "He can even make it spit out normal milk."

Z eyed Artoo appreciatively. "Smart little trashcan-thingy."

"He's got his moments," Luke said, smiling at Artoo as well. "Just don't let him out on his own. He came back covered in cake. Apparently he crashed a birthday party somewhere."

Z frowned. "There was a birthday party? Shows how much attention I've been paying." Then she looked down at Artoo and said, "No wandering off."

Artoo gave her an elaborately innocent whistle in response.

"Don't trust that," Luke warned.

"I wasn't planning to," Z assured him. "I have a little experience with robotics, you know. Bridge has a robot dog."

Artoo moved closer, letting off a very excited string of beeps and whistles. Friends!

Luke sighed. "Artoo wants to make friends. This is an incredibly bad idea."

"I'll talk to Bridge about it," she promised Artoo. "Maybe RIC wants a new friend, too." Then she turned to Luke. "Oh, come on. How bad could it be?" Famous last words.

"His last friend ended up in pieces," Luke said.

Artoo let out an outraged squeal and proceeded to chew Luke out for a good two minutes.

Luke shrugged. "Doesn't make it not true."

He turned to Z. "Artoo points out that was entirely Threepio's fault. Threepio was another droid. He got shot." Another series of blats and whistles. "Because Artoo wasn't there to stop Han from shooting him," Luke guessed.

Artoo paused, processing that, then gave an inward shrug. It was probably what had happened.

Z was kind of at a loss. "Well...these things happen?"

"Especially around Artoo," Luke said. "Think Bridge would mind if RIC got a little...singed?"

Z eyed Artoo a little more warily. "You could ask?"

Luke shrugged, looking a bit uncomfortable. "I suppose I could."

Z frowned at Luke and told him, "Bridge doesn't bite, dude, I swear."

"We have...too much in common," Luke said finally. "It's been easier for me to just stay out of his way."

"What the heck? He's a nice guy!" Z said. "Not to mention, my best friend and squadmate. Okay. Second-best friend, but my best friend is incarcerated, so."

"He's dating my father's old girlfriend, who's also my best friend. We're not going to get along," Luke said.

He blinked. "Your best friend's in jail?"

Z looked confused. "But that means you've got a lot in common! You both like me, you both like...whoever Bridge is dating..." Z had a feeling she should have known that. "You should totally get along!"

"Um. Yeah. Long story?"

Luke blushed. "I didn't say I was particularly proud of not liking the guy," he muttered. "I just don't think anyone's good enough for Rory. It's nothing terribly personal."

He grabbed onto the other topic with both hands. "I like long stories," he said hopefully.

"Well, get over yourself, because Bridge is cool," Z told him. "Um. Did I ever tell you I used to be homeless?"

"As soon as he stops dating Rory, I'll reconsider," Luke said with a humorless smile. "And no, you didn't." His eyes were sympathetic. "I'm sorry."

"Your logic is not like our Earth logic. Would you rather Rory was alone? And, yeah." She looked down at the plate in her hands. "I was. And there was this guy, Jack? He was like me. Well, not just like me, he was African-American and he could walk through walls instead of making copies of himself, but...we were both freaks. So we stuck together."

"Sticking together makes sense," Luke said, nodding. "And someone with Jack's abilities would be helpful when you're hungry, right?"
