After a few hours poking around on the X-Wing with Artoo and a quick check to see if Leia had written--she had, and there was still no sign of Han--Luke flung himself onto his bed and began to practice with the Force.

Yoda was not excited to be one of the things chosen to be juggled.

Seeing Luke distracted, Artoo made his way stealthily towards the door.

"Don't even think about it," Luke said sternly. "Last time you got out, you came back covered in cake."

Artoo whistled innocently. "No," Luke replied.

Artoo made sulky noises and rolled back towards the corner.

"It's not a big deal. I can visit," she said. "By the way, I was right about your mother. He all but confirmed when I asked him."

"You're sure?" Luke asked. "You can tell me if you're not."

The other thing Rory had said was too tempting not to follow up on. "Did he yell about her, too?"

"It's a sensitive subject for him."

Rory looked at Luke. "He did it for her," she added in a whisper.

And she was trying as hard as she could not to shake or cry with the ramifications of that simple statement.

Luke's jaw dropped.

"He turned to the Dark Side for her?"

"To save her."

Luke started trembling.

"And it didn't work," he whispered. "Right?"

He didn't really need the answer.

"No. It didn't."

Rory reached over and squeezed his hand.

Luke's hand shook under Rory's.

"That's...the saddest thing I've ever heard."

"It's terrifying," she whispered. "And heartbreaking."

If it was breaking her heart on several levels, well, she wasn't going to talk about it.

Luke broke out of his own pain to focus on Rory's.

"You think he would have done it for you, too," he whispered. "No. You know he would have."

"In a heartbeat," she said hoarsely, staring at their hands.

Luke wrapped his arms around her and clung.

"I'm sorry," he said.

Rory shrugged and held her tears back, opting to cling instead. "We'll fix it," she managed.

Luke blew out a shaky breath. "Okay," he said. He gave Rory a watery smile. "If you can stand it, so can I."

"We can't do nothing," she said quietly. "It'll hurt millions of times worse."

"This is pretty unbearable now," Luke whimpered, then shook his head. "Enough. How was California? No invasions, right?"

"No, just Christmas," she said, smoothing Luke's hair. "I have a present for you, by the way. I forgot to bring it."

"I was stuck in a swamp," Luke said, looking sheepish. "I didn't bring you anything."

"You also don't normally celebrate Christmas," she said. "I wouldn't expect you to."

Luke nodded, still looking a bit embarrassed. "Oh, speaking of gifts...Vader didn't happen to have a large silver rock in his office that looked like Han, right?"

Rory shook her head. "What would he have done with it?"

"Conversation piece?" Luke replied. He sighed. "I have no idea. Leia said there's still no sign of him."

"He'll turn up. Unless you think he brought it with him to Fandom, in which case I say we search...wherever it is he lives," Rory said.

"He lives at 33 Apocalypse," Luke said. He made a face. "I discovered that trick-or-treating."

"Ew," said Rory. "I think Professor Cale and Professor Next live there. And Dean Tick. Why does he live with people who would strongly look down on me breaking into their house?"
